Welcome to World History! The study of history should be a relevant and meaningful experience. This course will highlight people, events, issues, and themes instead of the memorization of trivial detail. The goal is to make connections with what we learn in class to the world around you. We will study the struggles and triumphs of humanity. Basically, everything is fair game.
Since history is created by all, but written by few, there will be an emphasis on viewing history from different perspectives. Course work will ask you to critically analyze the past and reflect upon how it has shaped the present. We will take a yearlong survey of the history of the Western World. The course is divided into two semesters: semester one encompasses a brief background in Greek and Roman traditions, followed by a brief tour of the Middle Ages.
In depth coverage includes the Renaissance, Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, and the American and French Revolutions. Semester two encompasses the Industrial Revolution, the Age of Imperialism, World War I, the Russian Revolution, World War II and the Holocaust, the Cold War and the struggles for liberation in the modern world.
